Jolly Harbour news - be always the first to know
More like a block party, last Saturday, the North Zone blocked off a portion of Bay Street (now one of the best roads in Antigua) to hold their annual community fair. With tantalising aromas watering the palates, the sweet notes of pan rising from the Le Chateau D'or Steel Orchestra followed by the energetic stylings of the oldest steel orchestra in the Caribbean, the C&W Hell's Gate Steel Orchestra, all talents were on deck as members from the North Zone came out in full support of their zone to give visitors a great time. But more than the people passing through the fair, the atmosphere was more of a block party where members of the community gathered to share their talents, and "lime" with each other, their families and their friends. Imagine the delights of the children hearing stories of the past and of Antigua from story teller and columnist Mary Quinn. Imagine the sheer awe coupled with amusement at the limbo man who bent, twisted and flipped through his entertainment. I'm sure you can imagine the rush of children who dashed forward at his invitation to try the limbo - minus the flames of course. Throughout the day, patrons were also entertained by the "man of Carnival" Papi, as he led the Villa-Point Iron Band through a series of heart-pounding, foot-moving rhythms. The Uprising Dancers then proceeded into their cultural routines, and fun-filled numbers. So as people munched their popcorn, devoured their dripping pieces of ribs, chicken, and inhaled their delectable fish dishes and a host of other local dishes, the entertainment continued into the evening with seasoned calypsonian King Zacari, followed by reigning Junior Calypso Monarch The Lyrics Man - and remember folks, they're all from the North Zone. High Intensity then took over, featuring local entertainer Kenne Blessin who thrilled the various members of the audience, from the tiny tots to the "young at heart". At the end of a very eventful evening, North Zone co-ordinator Carol Lashley exhaled with relief at the success of the event. As one of the youngest event planners, and also her first time, she was admitted being a bit worried about the threatening weather, which held up for the event, along with a few other glitches along the way. "But the other zones helped out, and we're planning to support them as well." But at the end of it all, she was excited, pleased and exhausted, at the fair's success. The next Community Pride fair will be the East Zone this Saturday at the Willikies Playing Field.
