Jolly Harbour diving - enjoy distinctive feeling
Although it has a well-developed tourism industry, Antigua is not particularly known for its diving environment. In part it is because the diving cannot compete with the impressive coral and fringing reefs elsewhere in the region. The good news is that a vacation in Antigua presents a wide array of water-based activities—plus long beautiful white sand beaches, more historical sites on land than most other islands, and a dry climate. Consequently a mixed group of divers and non-divers will be well catered for .Antigua is set on a shallow bank so most of the diving is shallow, though on the south side it is possible to do dives to over 100 feet. Unlike most of the other islands where the diving is on the fringing reef or around offshore rocks, Antigua has real coral reefs on the north, south and east sides. These reefs are relatively shallow and have suffered hurricane damage but both Boons Reef to the north and Cades Reef to the south are dived. Dolphin Fantaseas, Marina Bay features an introductory Dolphin Encounter program and an interactive Dolphin Swim for US$125 per person. The Dolphin Swim involves a half-hour up-close-and-personal playtime with dolphins. This outfitter also offers snorkeling and stingray adventures. There is little or no current in most places, and the water temperature averages about 80 F (25 C). Underwater visibility ranges from 50 to 140 feet, and tropical marine plants and animals are diverse and plentiful. Snorkeling is possible at many of both islands' most beautiful beaches; one of Antigua's best-known offshore sites, Cades Reef, is now partly contained in a designated underwater park. Another popular destination is the wreck of the Andes, a three-masted merchant ship that sank in 1905 and now rests in less than thirty feet of water in (ironically enough) Deep Bay. Antigua's dive facilities are far superior to those available on smaller Barbuda, and so most of the sites that have been established as dive destinations are Antiguan. The southern and eastern coasts are considered to offer the most consistent diving; for more advanced divers, the ledge of Sunken Rock on the south coast is a popular site. Dive depths generally range from 25 to 80 feet and can reach 180 feet; distances from shore to site are in some cases no more than five minutes and at most 40 minutes away.
